Enjoy the surroundings
Kulhuse is a charming holiday home area where you can go for lovely walks along paths down to Roskilde Fjord, and a 10-minute walk takes you to Nordskoven, with signposted walking and cycling routes and Denmark’s three oldest oak trees: Storkeegen, Snoegen and Kongeegen. Only Kongeegen remains, and it is estimated to be between 1,500 and 2,000 years old. This makes it the oldest oak tree in Northern Europe.
In the area around Kulhuse, you can follow the Fjordlandsstien trail and go for a cycle ride through the countryside or along the fjord, and pop into the nearest towns: Jægerspris, Frederikssund and Skibby. Walk up to Kulhuse harbour and splash about in the waves at Kulhuse sandy beach. You can also take the Columbus ferry from Kulhuse to Sølager and explore Arresø, Denmark’s largest lake. There are cycling and walking routes around the lake, or you can head to Hundested, where there is a wide selection of restaurants and shops.
In Jægerspris, be sure to visit Jægerspris Castle (the former royal castle) – don’t miss out on an ice cream from Denmark’s oldest ice-cream parlour, dating back to 1913.
Get a taste of the local area by stopping off at the many farm shops and specialist shops found in North Zealand. Several restaurants also focus on local and organic produce. You’ll easily find plenty of delicacies to take back to your holiday home.
